We are very proud to present
Northfield Framing & Fine Art Printing
Est. August 2019

Since opening Red Wing Framing & Fine Art Printing in 2002, our goal has been to create a triple focus of certified custom framing shops which are easily accessible to a large portion of south central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. With the addition of Northfield to our Red Wing (2002) and Rochester (2014) outlets, our dream is being realized. We are grateful to our customers, friends, families, and business supports who have helped make this happen. Thank YOU!

Our new shop is located in the beautiful Bridge Square of downtown Northfield, MN. The area has ample parking along streets and neighboring lots, and our design and retail shop has fantastic mojo. Northfield is a community rich with industry, agriculture, arts and culture, a fantastic foodie scene, and two prestigious universities, Carleton College and St. Olaf College.

In addition to our wide selection of custom framing samples and fine printing offerings, we are excited to offer readymade frames, framed and loose prints, original art, artisan crafted jewelry, handmade quilts, bags, and notions, pottery and Motawi art tiles, art cards, and fine gift items. Please stop by and see us Thursday (11-7pm) and Friday/Saturday (11-5pm)! Shop our wares, design a project with our master framer, take a seat in our comfy chair, and enjoy the opulence and warmth of our brand new space.

“Come on in, the framing’s fine!”

ScrewArt-2

We are so excited to have two pieces of original art by Cynthia Weitzel.  The piece on the left is called “Enculturation” and the companion piece on the right is called “Resilience”.

ScrewArt-3

Each piece measures 26″x26″5″ (deep) and the medium are screws.  The art is very heavy and because of the dimensionality if the screws, it encourages being touched.

Cynthia is inspired by Andrew Myers, who is another screw artist.  This is a time-consuming process.  Each screw must be mapped and the heights are carefully planned.

It is physically demanding and is hard on the artist, especially if the pieces are large.

ScrewArt-1

We have had these in the front window for several weeks and it literally has been stopping traffic.

RochesterFrontDoor

The Rochester shop is finally open and art is beginning to appear on the walls.

We have opted for a ‘quiet’ opening for the time being because the work load right now is nearly overwhelming.  Once we get the near term deadlines out of the way, we will begin to think about some kind of exciting opening event.

Biederman

“Study for a Construction in Wood” – by Charles Biederman, 1952,11″x14″, paper in relief, 1952.

These types of projects are especially enjoyable. It is a privilege to design and build a framing presentation package for significant works of art by significant artists.  Biederman qualifies on both accounts.

Biederman was an independent personality (read: difficult to get to know) who lived in a rural Red Wing home when he died in 2004 at the age of 98.  He was a prominent American Modernist painter and sculptor.  He was predisposed to using geometric subjects in his art.

Because he lived the last fifty years of his life in Red Wing, there are many locals who came to know him over the years.  He lived a quiet and almost reclusive life, except he was a prolific letter writer.  It is in these letters that Biederman would share his strong opinions about all matters and topics.

The materials for this project just arrived this week and photos of the finished packaged will be posted.
